Gold camp of November 1896 on the Dakan ranch: stage lines from Castle Rock, Sedalia and Palmer Lake, Stott & Garrison's store, a newspaper (the Dakan News), the Black Canon group of claims on Fritz Mountain; PO established January 1897 (John C. Harrison), discontinued Aug. 15, 1898, mail to Perry Park (CHNC, S-0096). Wikipedia's list dates the office Dec. 30, 1896 to Aug. 2, 1898. Albert Dakan, the oldest son, wrote the 1940 account of Fort Washington.
Where it was
NE1/4 NE1/4 of Sec. 8, T9S R68W, labeled 'Town of Dakan' on the Larkspur society's 2011 map of the area (Perry Park binder LHS_9 p. 45). Center of that quarter-quarter; good to about a quarter mile. Wikipedia's point (39.238, -105.066) is four miles southwest, beside Dakan Mountain, and is not used. The Dakan family's cash-entry patents lie next door: George W. Dakan's NE1/4 NE1/4 and Frank Dakan's parcels in Sec. 9, T9S R68W (BLM records printed in Larkspur Historical Society binder 9 pp. 48-50); Allen and Elizabeth Dakan homesteaded at Perry Park in 1870 (1913 obituary, p. 48). In November 1896 'Allan Dakan, whose ranch adjoins the scene of the strike,' arranged to plat twenty acres (Castle Rock Journal, Nov. 13, 1896); Mrs. W. A. Dakan filed the plat, 180 lots, in January 1897 (CRJ, Jan. 29, 1897).
