What we know

R. E. Johnson gave 240 acres to the Forest Service in 1944 for a forestry demonstration unit (accepted 1945). In 1950 the Black Forest Community Club and the Izaak Walton League built the 'Black Forest Picnic Grounds, Pike National Forest' there, and in 1977 it was leased to the county park district for a regional park (von Ahlefeldt pp. 94-95). That today's park includes the Johnson land is. Ellett (p. 59) says part of Tom Black's property became a park kept by the Izaak Walton League, now county.
